Only Machine Guns manufactured AND registered BEFORE May, 1986 may be legally transferred for private ownership.

Contrary to popular belief, no special “license” or yearly fee is required to own an NFA item.

Purchasing an NFA item is a 4-part process:

1. Application to accept transfer of (or manufacture in some cases) an NFA item (Usually ATF Form 4 or ATF Form 1).
2. Payment of the required Tax (Usually $200; $5 for AOWs).
3. Background Check conducted by the BATFE.
4. Approval of the Application and remittance by the BATFE of a Canceled Stamp as proof of Tax Paid.
